Lyman Wight (1796-1858) was disaffected from the LDS Church after the death of Joseph Smith. He and others moved to Texas, forming their own colony. Growing tensions between the north and south made Wight decide to move his colony back into the northern part of the United States, but he died as the journey began in March 1858. Lyman Wight, son of Levi Wight Jr. and Sarah Corbin, was born 9 May 1796. He served as an LDS apostle from 1841-1849. Shortly before the death of Joseph Smith, plans were made to move some colonies of the church west. Texas had been considered as a possible place for the saints to find refuge. After the death of Joseph Smith, Wight tried to convince Brigham Young to let him lead a colony to Texas.
